Santorini is a year-round island, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Here is what to expect month by month, and when to book which kind of tour.

April to June: the sweet spot

Spring brings warm sunshine, green hillsides and far fewer crowds than midsummer. May and June are ideal for private sightseeing tours – comfortable temperatures for exploring Oia, Pyrgos and Akrotiri, and clear skies for sunset photos. Sea temperatures become pleasant for swimming by mid-June, which is when catamaran cruises really come into their own.

July and August: peak season

The busiest and hottest months. Expect vibrant nightlife, every restaurant open, and cruise ships daily. Book tours and helicopter transfers well in advance – the best time slots sell out weeks ahead. If you visit in peak season, choose a morning tour to beat the heat and the crowds, or a sunset cruise that departs before the evening rush.

September and October: warm seas, softer light

Many locals consider early autumn the best time of all. The sea is at its warmest, the summer crowds thin out after mid-September, and the light is beautiful for photography. It is also harvest season – a perfect time for a private wine tour among the vineyards of Assyrtiko.

November to March: the quiet season

Winter Santorini is calm and atmospheric, with mild days, dramatic skies over the caldera and almost no tourists.
